Multiple agencies in Lowell, Massachusetts, are investigating how a third grader got his hands on a gun and took it to school.
Police say the student brought a pistol from home, took it out of his backpack and showed his friends Monday.
One of those friends told a parent, who told the school.
Police investigated and say the boy thought it was an airsoft gun, but it turned out to be a .25 caliber pistol.
When asked, the child's father turned it in to police.
The gun was not loaded when he handed it over.
The father is now charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and improper storage.
