All-Star Football Game Cut Short by Brawl

Police in Cranston, RI, police say they were not contacted about the game

A late-game brawl at the Rhode Island Football Coaches Association East-West Senior Game forced officials to call the contest early Saturday at Cranston Stadium.

Steve Stoehr, former President of the Rhode Island Football Coaches Association, confirmed the incident saying, "I'm not very happy about it because it doesn't look good for the R.I. Coaches Association. I am very disappointed something like that takes place. I think coaches should be able to control that."
Rhode Island Interscholastic League President Tom Mezzanotte said, "The RIIL is not involved with the game in any way, shape or form. We don't sanction that contest."

According to Cranston Police Captain Gerard Carnevale, nobody contacted police about there being a game. "I have concerns about the fact that we weren't told there was going to be a football game there," Carnevale said, "and that we weren't told there was a fight there."

"We're going to look into it. I'm going to look into why we weren't told about it."

Players took to social media after the game as well. One player tweeted, "That brawl was worth my 100 dollar game fee."

Another wrote, "My last football game in Rhode Island ended early in a bench-clearing brawl."
