Another RI Town Considers Plastic Bag Ban

Another Rhode Island town is considering a plastic bag ban after the city of Newport passed a similar law.

The Newport Daily News reports the Middletown Town Council is considering a ban on businesses providing plastic shopping bags to customers. Those who ignore the ban could be fined up to $300.

About 12 people, including several students, asked the council to support the ban during a hearing Monday. Residents described how the bags litter the community and harm sea life. No one spoke against the ban.

The town administrator could grant a waiver for those facing "undue" hardships due to the ban.

The council is expected to vote on the ban May 1. It has not specified when the ban would go into effect, if approved.
