Are Beaches Ready for Summer?

Are beaches on Cape Cod ready for summer after our stormy New England winter?

With summer just around the corner, no one wants to see a closed beach due to construction.

Normally somewhat protected from the deep ocean swell by the arm of Cape Cod, storms in recent winters have brought more frequent wind from the north, resulting in more than the usual damage along Cape Cod bay.

The storms are affecting more than just public beaches. On the outer Cape, where sea walls are not allowed along the National Seashore, the cliff takes a beating every year. So much so that many tell me some don't even have stairs, making access a regular challenge. However, sand lost from the bluffs naturally replenishes beaches and sandbars in the water.

Rules against building sea walls may be good for beachgoers and surfers, but property owners know it's only a matter of time until their home maybe lost to the sea. Back in Dennis were some sea walls have been built, the frustrating and expensive effort to keep property is a constant battle.

With luck, Tonka trucks will replace the excavators in time for beach season.
