Boosters' Club President Accused of Larceny

John Norton was arrested Wednesday and charged with larceny. He pleaded not guilty and was granted $1,000 bail

North Reading, Massachusetts, police have arrested the president of the local high school athletic boosters club for allegedly stealing more than $10,000 from the organization.

John Norton was arrested Wednesday and charged with larceny. He pleaded not guilty and was granted $1,000 bail.

Police say the 68-year-old Norton solicited donations from residents and businesses that were supposed to support North Reading High School sports programs, but instead diverted the money into his own pockets.

Investigators say Norton used a club debit card to withdraw money from club accounts and wrote checks for cash on the club's accounts. The alleged thefts occurred between December 2013 and June.

Norton's lawyer refused comment.
