Boston Police on High Alert After NYPD Shootings

Boston Police are investigating after a suspect pointed a gun at an officer

The murders of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu have police around New England, and the country, on higher alert.

Sunday night in Boston's Dorchester neighborhood, police say a man pointed a gun at an officer. The officer fired his weapon, but no one was hurt.

The city's police commissioner says the officer reacted according to his training when he fired shots, but he adds that police are feeling tensions throughout the community.

"I think it clearly shows the danger we're seeing out there every night," said Commissioner William Evans.

"Very difficult times in these country," said Mayor Marty Walsh. "The emotions are high, and I'd ask people just to temper it down a little bit."

Monday, community and religious leaders are calling to the public to stay calm.

"There are people who have talked about this being a tense time," said Rev. Jeffrey Brown ofthe Ten Point Coalition. "We are all gathered here today to call for a time of peace."

At a press conference, the group says it's hopeful the community of Boston can keep moving forward and concentrate on the deep-rooted issues that need to be addressed.

They say this can only be accomplished through communication, not violence.

"You have leaders here who are committed to having that dialogue around the hard questions, on the hard issues in the city that we have not touched upon," said Brown.

The weapon in Sunday night's incident was recovered. Boston Police are searching for the suspect.
