The Boston Red Sox have signed manager John Farrell to a contract extension, General Manager Ben Cherington announced Saturday.

Farrell's new deal will keep him in Boston through the 2017 season with a club option for 2018. Farrell is entering his third season as manager of the Red Sox.

Farrell has amassed a 168-156 record over the last two seasons. In 2013, he finished second in American League Manager of the Year voting after coaching the Red Sox to a World Series championship. The team posted a 97-65 record that season.

Prior to signing in Boston, Farell managed the Toronto Blue Jays. He also spent four years as the Red Sox pitching coach from 2007-2010.
