Judging the cleanliness and food-safety practices of Boston restaurants will soon be was easy as ABC.
The Boston Globe reports that the City Council on Wednesday approved a proposal that clears the way for the city to issue letter grades to eateries. It now needs mayoral approval.
Restaurants will receive an A, B, or C grade based on the number and severity of violations found during inspections.
Grades will be posted on the city's website. After a year, restaurants will be required to post their grades in their windows. Failure to do so will result in fines.
Several other major cities have similar grading systems.
Local restaurant industry leaders have worried that Boston's system could be unfair, even though it was developed with input from the Massachusetts Restaurant Association.
