The Boston Symphony Orchestra is extending the contract of music director Andris Nelsons, who last year become the orchestra's youngest conductor in a century.
The BSO announced Monday that the new eight-year contract, which will run through 2022, replaces the original five-year deal that began last September.
The new contract also includes an evergreen clause that reflects what the BSO said was a "mutual desire" for a longer-term commitment beyond 2022.
The 36-year-old Latvian-born Nelsons previously served as music director for the Latvian National Opera and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in England.
He said in a statement that he was honored and excited to extend his future in Boston.
The BSO's managing director, Mark Volpe, called Nelsons' first year as music director of the 134-year-old orchestra "wonderfully successful."
