Boston to Trash Space Savers

Many residents rely on space savers amid the ongoing struggle to find parking

Space savers are essential to anyone living in the city during the winter, especially for residents living in South Boston.

"Your car is your car and your space is your space, said Boston resident Maggie Shields.

Residents utilize chairs, tables, cones, or whatever else they can find to reserve their shoveled out parking spots. Unfortunately for them, the city will be removing those space savers come Monday morning's trash collection.

"It's a constant battle in Southie and I think everyone has faced the challenge of trying to find a parking spot," said Boston resident Tyler Swaim.

Space savers are really a way of life, but Mayor Marty Walsh stresses that they are only supposed to be used for up to 48 hours after a storm.

"I still ask people to respect one another," Walsh said.

Walsh stressed the city needs to remove them now.

"We've had a month of storms here. Parking is going to be very difficult right now in the neighborhoods and it's going to continue to be difficult for the next month," Walsh added.

The city of Somerville removed all the space savers from their streets this past week.

Many Bostonians feel the city needs to implement a parking ban in order to efficiently clear the streets of snow.

"I would rather them take care of the snow and have everyone put their car away that way you wouldn't need a space saver anymore cause all the excess snow is gone," said Boston resident Jen Johnson.

Until the snow is gone, space saver or not, the battle will surely rage on for coveted parking spaces.
