Ex-Patriot Spikes Cited in Hit-and-Run

Ex-Patriot Spikes Cited in Crash

Former New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes has been cited for rear-ending another vehicle on a Massachusetts highway then leaving the scene.

Authorities say three people suffered minor injuries.

A 52-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, all from Billerica, were taken to the hospital.

Spikes' Mercedes-Benz Maybach was found abandoned in the median of Interstate 495 in Foxboro, Massachusetts, at about 3 a.m. Sunday with heavy front-end damage.

Officials say Spikes was speeding and driving negligently when he crashed his vehicle in the back of the SUV.

Spikes is being charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury crash, operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger, speeding and failure to stay within marked lanes.

The lawyer representing the three people injured in the crash said the family is "gratified" that charges were brought against Spikes.

"It confirms their belief that they were hit from behind by the vehicle owned by Mr. Spikes," Attorney Marc Breakstone said. "The family remains bewildered at how anyone, let alone an NFL player, could drive so recklessly, then flee the scene."

27-year-old Spikes will be summoned to Wrentham District Court at a date to be determined.

Neither Spikes nor his agent have commented.

The Patriots cut Spikes on Monday.
