Connecticut Firefighter Says She Was Discriminated Against While Pregnant in Civil Rights Lawsuit

Regina Scates says she was still capable of working when she was forced to take unpaid maternity leave

A 37-year-old Bridgeport, Connecticut, firefighter has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit claiming she was discriminated against when she became pregnant.

Regina Scates filed her lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court alleging violations of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Connecticut Fair Employment Practices Act.

Scates alleges the city unfairly disciplined her last year for taking pregnancy-related sick days and then forced her to take an unpaid maternity leave despite providing unlimited paid sick leave for non-pregnancy related physical disabilities.

Scates alleges she was still capable of working when she was placed on leave.

She is seeking unspecified monetary damages.

The city has not responded to the lawsuit, which was filed on Sept. 26. City attorney Mark Anastasi did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
