Building Collapses in Lawrence; Nearby Residents Evacuated

At least 35 residents in the building next door had to leave their homes

Neighbors were evacuated after a building collapsed Wednesday morning in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Authorities confirm the building at 189 Newbury St. on the mayor's list of condemned structures and was being demolished at the time. Gas had already been cut off.

No one was injured in the collapse.

At least 35 people who live in the building next door were notified beforehand of the demolition. They were evacuated when the building came crashing down, and they will not be able to stay at home Wednesday night.

"It is a scheduled demolition, we knew there were structural flaws to this, we made that case to the court, that is why the court mandated for us to take down this property," said Lawrence Mayor Daniel Rivera.

Those residents are hoping crews can escort them back inside at some point to retrieve their belongings.

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is on scene to assist people.
