Burlington Keeping Sanctuary Plans Despite Trump's Order

Officials in Vermont's largest city say they're going to study the implications of a new executive order signed by Republican President Donald Trump that instructs federal agencies to cut federal grants for immigrant-protecting "sanctuary cities."

Burlington City Council President Jane Knodell tells The Burlington Free Press the city plans study its policies surrounding individuals living in the country unlawfully and try to make sure they feel safe.

Mayor Miro Weinberger says they'll be guided by "inclusive values" and "longstanding practices."

Sanctuary cities refer to municipalities that don't use their resources to enforce federal immigration law or prohibit law enforcement from asking people about their immigration status.

The city's police commission is accepting public feedback on a fair and impartial policing policy.
