Large Pipe Burst Floods Road in Norwood, Massachusetts

A large water main break has closed down a road in Norwood, Massachusetts, and is expected to impact traffic through the rest of Thursday.

Police say University Avenue will be closed from Route 1 and Canton Street for an extended period of time due to flooding.

By midday Thursday, crews were still working to fix the break, which happened around 1:30 a.m., including waiting for a trenching box to stabilize a trench that has been dug to repair the line, which is 16-feet in diameter.

Norwood Police Sgt. Timothy McDonagh said, "They're currently requesting larger equipment, a trenching box that has to go into stabilize the trench."

A few nearby office buildings have been forced to shut down since crews had to turn off water.

Police are advising drivers to avoid the area by taking Route 1 or Canton Street.

McDonagh added, "Obviously stay away from the area , continue up Route 1 or continue up Canton Street. Just don't come down University."
