Bus Driver Charged With Assault Over Snowball

Charge stems from incident Tuesday night in Lynn, Mass.

An MBTA bus operator has been charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, in an incident that stemmed from a snowball. 

40-year-old Derek Smith was arrested early Wednesday by Transit Police after an incident took place Tuesday night in Central Square in Lynn, Massachusetts.

The Route 455 bus operator, who has been with the MBTA for four years, told police he assaulted a man who threw a snowball at him.

A witness told police that the bus operator punched and kicked the 43-year-old Revere man, who is being treated for a head injury at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Smith is being held pending his dangerousness hearing on Monday.
