A Wednesday shooting in Ottawa, Ontario, that killed one soldier and left two others injured has sparked public Massachusetts buildings to increase security.

The Massachusetts Statehouse spokesman released a statement Wednesday afternoon:

"While no specific threat has been identified in Massachusetts, providing security at public buildings is always a critical part of our mission. As such, the administration has directed State Police to enhance visibility and patrols around key locations. We are closely monitoring events in Canada and remain in contact with our local, state and federal homeland security partners. We continue to ask the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity by calling 9-1-1."

A gunman with a scarf over his face shot to death a Canadian soldier standing guard at the nation's war memorial, then stormed Parliament in a hail of gunfire before he was killed by the usually ceremonial sergeant-at-arms, authorities and witnesses said. Two other people were wounded and in stable conditions.
