Authorities say a 9-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus a short distance from the Statehouse in Providence.
Police confirmed that the child was hit by the bus around 8:30 a.m. Thursday near a gas station in Providence, where she lives.
The child was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where they say she died from her injuries. Her name and age were not made public.
"It's tragic," said Steven Pare, Providence public safety commissioner. "Our hearts break for her and her family."
According to WJAR-TV, the girl was in the area with her father and was trying to cross the street.
"We're waiting on the video portion of the investigation to determine if she was with her dad while she was crossing the street," Providence Police Col. Hugh Clements said. "There are many people to talk to and there are many video cameras to look at."
RIPTA spokeswoman Barbara Polichetti says the agency is cooperating with police.
The bus driver was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Police say no charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing. They are not releasing further details at this time.
