Boy on Bicycle Impaled After Striking Tree in Saugus, Massachusetts

An 11-year-old boy was impaled by a branch after hitting a tree while riding a bike Thursday in Saugus, Massachusetts.

State police confirm the child was riding at the Breakheart Reservation when he lost control. He struck a tree, and a branch punctured his chest.

The child was conscious and alert as he was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where his dad told necn over the phone Thursday night that he had surgery and was sleeping.

"As we showed up, we saw the police cars coming down with two mountain bikes," said Mike Bakeman, who was running around the time of the incident.

The reservation is on state property and spans about 640 acres of terrain on the Saugus-Wakefield line.

Police say the boy was riding with an adult family member.

They also say he somehow lost control, what exactly happened is still not known, but regulars call it fairly rough terrain.

"We'll run the trails and you have to jump over trees that have fallen down so I can definitely see how that happened, one loose rock and he goes over the handlebars," said Bakeman.
