A Maine state senator is resigning, saying he is struggling with alcohol addiction.
Sen. David Dutremble, a Democrat from Biddeford, announced Wednesday that he is resigning, effective Thursday.
In a statement, Dutremble says he has been battling alcohol abuse and wants to focus on his recovery.
Two weeks ago, he said that he would not be running for re-election.
Dutremble, who was first elected to the Senate in 2012, represents Senate District 32, which includes Alfred, Biddeford, Dayton.
A special election will be held to fill the seat. In the meantime, Dutremble's departure leaves the Senate with the majority Republicans holding an even larger margin, with 20 Republicans and 14 Democrats.
