A Civil-war-era ledger book from a small town in Penobscot County is back in Maine.

The Maine State Archives says the book, which is now in its possession, shows how much aid was given to servicemen and their families in Mattawamkeag during the war. It details the cost at the time of things like shoes, molasses and tobacco.

Officials say the book lists the names of 19 families, including several Civil War veterans.

A staff member at the Archives saw the book on eBay and the seller, who lives in Missouri, agreed to send it back to Maine.

The Archives plan to scan the book and keep an electronic copy so the public can see it. The original ledger will be sent back to the Mattawamkeag.
