Couple Accused of Deer Poaching Operation

Vermont Fish and Wildlife wardens have accused a couple of running an elaborate deer poaching operation.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife wardens have accused a couple of running an elaborate deer poaching operation.

The Irasburg couple, 66-year-old Wayne Dion and 63-year-old Jennie Dion, are accused of multiple charges related to deer baiting and illegal night hunting practices.

In addition to 91 deer antler plaques and 16 shoulder mounts, wardens say a search of the couple's home showed seven chest freezers and several plastic totes containing corn and apples. Wardens believe the food was used to illegally bait deer.

Also found was five spotlights pointed toward a backyard enclosed by a 400-foot cedar hedge. Game trails led into the yard.

The Dions are scheduled to be arraigned on Dec. 29; it wasn't immediately known if they had a lawyer and a listed phone number wasn't in service Monday.
