Couple Arrested on Sex Trafficking Charge

It wasn't known Thursday if they are represented by a lawyer

Rhoe Island State Police have arrested a Cranston couple on kidnapping and sex trafficking charges following a motor vehicle stop for a license plate's display.

Police say Niesha Bessell was driving with a passenger in the rear seat who appeared to be shaking during the stop in Providence shortly after midnight Wednesday. Michael Gomes, who was arrested with Bessell, was in the front seat.

The unidentified victim showed a trooper her cell phone with the message, "get me out of the car."

She told police she had been kidnapped and was forced into prostitution by the 29-year-old Bessell and 28-year-old Gomes.

Bessell and Gomes are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday night on charges of kidnapping and trafficking for forced labor or commercial sexual activity.

It wasn't known Thursday if they are represented by a lawyer.
