Driver in Critical Condition After Route 8 Crash

A driver is in critical condition after hitting a pole on Route 8 in Winsted.

The 1997 Honda Civic hit the pole around 1 a.m. and the road is shut down between Route 20 and Deer Hill Road, but police have reopened it.

Police said the driver was going north on Route 8, or Colebrook River Road, went off the road and hit a telephone pole on the southbound side of the road.

A person who was passing by pulled the driver from the car just before it burst into flames.

An ambulance then responded and brought the injured driver to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, then LifeStar transported the patient to Hartford Hospital.

Winchester Police and the state police accident investigation team are investigating.
