Apartment Building Destroyed in 4-Alarm Fire

An apartment building was destroyed in a four-alarm fire Saturday night in Gardner, Massachusetts.

Fire officials from neighboring Fitchburg confirmed that their department responded for mutual aid to the blaze in the area of 403 Chestnut Street, which also extended to 407 Chestnut Street.

A tenant told NECN that she had to jump from a window to safety. The Gardner Fire Department says two tenants were transported to local hospitals as a precaution, including one victim who cut his hand while trying to rescue someone from the building.

Firefighters battled the flames for hours in cold weather. They were off scene by 5:15 a.m.

Crews determined that the blaze began in the back bedroom on the first floor; however, the cause remains under investigation.
