5-Alarm Fire Destroys Apartment Buildings in Sanford, Maine

A five-alarm fire spread to five buildings Thursday afternoon in Sanford, Maine, destroying two apartment buildings.

According to Sanford Fire Chief Steve Benotti, everyone living in the buildings is accounted for and was able to self-evacuate. He said it is being investigated as an accidental fire.

The fire started in a building on Island Avenue around 1:15 p.m. and quickly spread to four other buildings on the block.

Benotti said multiple people were evaluated for minor injuries at the scene.

He did not know how many people lived in the buildings, but said at least two of them are total losses.

Nearby roads were closed to traffic Thursday night, and surrounding homes were without power.
