Home Destroyed by 5-Alarm Blaze on Plum Island, Mass.

Cause of the fire is under investigation

A home was destroyed by a massive fire on Saturday in Newbury, Massachusetts.

The blaze broke out at about 1:15 p.m. at the home on 20th Street on Plum Island, and quickly reached 5-alarms.

Thick, black smoke could be seen for quite a distance.

Homeowner Kenny Dorr said he and two friends are now without a place to stay after the fire destroyed the structure and cars in their driveway.

"It's very upsetting to see something like that happening and your whole house go up in flames pretty much," Dorr said.

The fire was so intense that it melted the siding off two nearby homes.

"I was up on roof with the hose, getting the embers off the roof," said neighbor, Bob McCarthy.

One firefighter had to be treated for heat exhaustion but is expected to make a full recovery. No other injuries were reported.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
