“This Is a Bad Year for Me”: Home Destroyed in Fire

Officials are investigating the cause of a massive fire that demolished a home Thursday in Haverhill, Massachusetts.

The fire is out, but crews worked into the night to secure the building.

The blaze broke out around 2:30 p.m. when Michael Sullivan was sleeping in a second-floor bedroom.

"I smelled smoke. I figured someone had a fire going," he said. "I went downstairs, and the whole bottom of the stairs was full of smoke."

Sullivan was lucky to make it out unhurt - he ran out the back door and a neighbor called 911. Fire crews responded promptly, but the fire was so ferocious that it quickly consumed the house, as well as a camper and truck parked in the backyard.

Sullivan lived at the home with his two brothers. They say it's been a rough summer - they just lost their mother.

"Three weeks before that, I had a tumor removed. This is a bad year for me, I don't know what it is," said Sullivan. "Hopefully this is the end, I got nothing else to go, everything else is gone."

The brothers' cousin, Debbie Cannata, says she will help them with whatever they need. The American Red Cross is also assisting.
