Woman Burned in Fire Dies

The smoke alarm in her apartment had been disabled, according to fire officials

A 63-year-old woman who was badly burned in a 2-alarm fire in Winchester, Massachusetts, on Wednesday has died.

Fire officials said in a press release issued Thursday that the woman burned in the fire at The Gables assisted living facility at 299 Cambridge Road had passed away.

"This fire was a terrible tragedy for our community," Winchester Fire Chief John Nash said.

Hallway smoke alarms alerted building officials to the fire in the woman's apartment, but the smoke alarm in the woman's apartment had been disabled.

Fire officials said the woman's clothing caught fire, causing serious burns, but there was little fire in the apartment itself.

Officials say the cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.
