Body of Missing Man Recovered from Lake in Chester

The body of a man who went missing in Cedar Lake in Chester has been recovered.

Crews began searching for the body of 48-year-old Paul Haney of Manchester after the canoe that Haney and his girlfriend, Carol Bremser, 49, were in capsized while on the lake around 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Haney's body was recovered Sunday around noon nearby the place where he first went missing.

Bremser was rescued by bystanders. According to First Selectwoman Lauren Gister, the bystanders told officials that Bremser was heavily intoxicated at the time of her rescue.

Authorities do not believe that life jackets were used.

DEEP EnCon Police led the search and recovery mission with assistance from the Connecticut State Police dive teams and sonar boat.

Due to the search, the Chester town beach and the beach at the YMCA’s Camp Hazen will be closed.
