Crews Search for Boy in Water

Coast Guard confirmed search for child in New Bedford, Mass.

Crews are searching for a missing 12-to-13-year-old boy in the waters of New Bedford, Massachusetts, the U.S. Coast Guard confirms.

New Bedford Police told Coast Guard watchstanders that a woman had seen a young boy jump into the water from a pier.

The caller said the boy went underwater, surfaced and then went back down without resurfacing.

"We don't even know if the parents are here, we don't know if the parents are home and have no clue," said Roselyn Amaro. "I just hope that all this is fake and that nobody has to go through that."

Massachusetts State Police, which had been called in to assist New Bedford Police, told NECN they did not believe the call for a distressed swimmer, which set off the search, to be credible.

The state police troop that was on the scene had been cleared around 7:30 p.m.

Police say that the fact that no reports came in for a missing person lead them to believe that there was no child lost in the water.

Despite that, crews were still searching the water Saturday night.

The call came in around 5:45 p.m.

NECN will have more as this story develops.
