Maine Forest Rangers say firefighters are battling a large fire near the summit of one of the state's tallest mountains.
Crews took on the 12-acre fire on Mt. Abram in Franklin County on Sunday. Rangers say it could take several more days before it's controlled.
Regional Forest Ranger Jeffrey Currier tells The Portland Press Herald the fire was ignited by a lightning strike on Wednesday and started to spread on Friday.
Currier says two Maine Forest Service helicopters have been dropping water on the blaze for the past two days. The helicopters hauled in several loads of 72-gallon pumpable water blivets.
He estimates that about 27 acres have burned since the fire started.
The mountain is one of 13 peaks in the state that are higher than 4,000 feet.
