An Essex district attorney's office investigation has determined that Salisbury's police chief and a town officer were justified in fatally shooting a charging man armed with a machete and a knife.
Chief Thomas Fowler and Officer Michael Alder fired two shots each at Nicolas Foster on May 14 as he came at officers with a machete with a 35-inch blade and a knife with a 7-inch blade.
District attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a statement that the "officers reasonably believed Foster posed an immediate threat of killing or seriously injuring them or others."
Blodgett says Foster ignored several orders to drop the weapons.
Authorities say Foster had previously attacked and stabbed his wife and her friend and used his vehicle to hit a police cruiser. The stabbing victims survived.
