Dad Driving Drunk With Children in Car Hits Police Cruiser: Police

State police have arrested a Ridgefield man who is accused of driving drunk with his three young children in the car and crashing into a Southbury police cruiser vehicle.

Police said Todd Schoenherr, 47, of Ridgefield, hit the cruiser on Route 67 at the exit 15 onramp to Interstate 84 West at 12:08 a.m. on Sunday when he ran a red light and turned left.

Schoenherr smelled of alcohol, failed field sobriety tests and admitted to having a couple of drinks, according to a news release from state police.

Schoenherr's 5-year-old daughter, 8-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter were in the car with him at the time, according to police.

An ambulance brought the police officer whose cruiser was struck to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Schoenherr was charged with operating under the influence, risk of injury to a child and failure to obey a control signal.

He was released on a $5,000 bond and he is due in Waterbury Superior Court on Dec. 9.
