Dartmouth College Professor Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Child Porn Collection

J. Martin Favor pleaded guilty in March and resigned earlier this month

A Dartmouth College professor who was caught with an extensive collection of child pornography has been sentenced to 5-1/2 years in prison.

J. Martin Favor pleaded guilty in March and resigned earlier this month. He was on paid leave since his September arrest.

His sentence handed down Monday will be followed by six years of supervised release. A prosecutor had recommended a 6-1/2 year sentence, and his attorney requested three years.

Favor's lawyer says his 49-year-old client recognizes he suffers from an addiction and is seeking treatment.

Favor had shared some of the images on the social media site Tumblr.

The case partly relied on an image-identifying technology refined by a Dartmouth computer science professor. Hany Farid says he felt "conflicted" to see a colleague prosecuted.
