A Maine dentist is paying nearly a half million dollars to settle claims involving improper billing for such irregularities as unsubstantiated tooth extractions and prescriptions of narcotics without proper justification.

U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty says on Wednesday that Daniel Schecter paid $484,745 to settle the claims. Delahanty says the federal government and state of Maine filed a civil complaint alleging Schecter improperly billed MaineCare, Maine's Medicaid program.

The complaint alleges Schecter violated the federal False Claims Act from Jan. 1, 2009 to Nov. 19, 2012. Delahanty says the improper billing concerned services rendered without medical necessity or proper documentation.

The settlement amount represents the amount Schecter improperly billed. He provided services in Rockport, Maine.
