Dermatologist Pleads Not Guilty to 58 Charges

A Falmouth, Maine, doctor says he is not guilty of taking more than $3 million in illegal medical deductions, illegally distributing prescription medications and fraudulently writing prescriptions for a family member.

Dermatologist Dr. Joel Sabean entered his plea in U.S. District Court in Portland on Thursday. A grand jury indicted him last week on five counts of tax evasion, 52 counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances and one count of health care fraud.

The Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1WjKTkD ) reports the magistrate judge ordered Sabean to surrender his passport and have no contact with one of his children as a condition of his release on personal recognizance. The indictment alleges that Sabean took $3 million in fraudulent medical deductions from 2009 to 2013 in filing his taxes.
