New Hampshire is now the latest New England state to declare a state of emergency over recent drug overdoses.

It follows the growing popularity over a synthetic drug known as “spice” and authorities in Concord and Manchester have seen an uptick in cases.

In March, Massachusetts also declared a state of emergency over a large number of heroin overdoses.

Dr. Mohammed Issa, an addiction and pain specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital, joined us for more on the subject.

Issa said both spice and heroin are very addictive drugs. He said that a spike in heroin use in the last 10 years, which he attributes to several factors.

He said it’s due in part to the tremendous amount of opiate-based medications which are being prescribed.

Issa said with spice there is no antidote. People who overdose on the drug just have to be monitored in a hospital until it passed.
