Driver Charged With OUI After Hitting Boy on Bike

Police have charged a man with operating under the influence of drugs after his SUV hit a boy riding a bicycle Friday in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The boy was hit on Lowell Street around 5 p.m. Springfield Police Captain Robert Strempek told necn affiliate WWLP that the child was conscious when he was taken to the hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries.

Strempek was unsure of the boy's age, but said he could have been around 9.

Investigating officers arrested the driver after talking with him, and discovering a few bags of suspected heroin. He was arrested and charged with OUI.

"Heroin," confirmed Strempek. "It was a user's amount."

The investigation is in its preliminary stages, and police had not yet filed all the appropriate charges against the suspect.
