New York Man Killed After Hitting DOT Truck on Route 8

A 61-year-old New York man died after hitting a Connecticut Department of Transportation truck on Route 8 in Seymour on Thursday afternoon.

Police said Daniel R. Cormier, 61, of Glendale, New York, was driving on Route 8 South just before exit 20 around noon when he veered to the right, drove along the guardrail and hit a DOT vehicle.

Cormier was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police.

DOT officials said the vehicle the driver hit was a "crash truck," which is a vehicle holding barrels designed to protect the crew.

The DOT crew was there to fix potholes and the DOT driver was shaken up, but is OK, officials from DOT said.

The crash happened between exits 22 and 20 and the southbound side of the road was closed, but reopened around 4 p.m.

This was the second fatal crash on Route 8 South on Thursday. Two people were killed in a wrong-way crash near exit 13 in Shelton early this morning.
