Drug Charges Dropped Against Former Swim Coach

Drug charges against a former Massachusetts teacher have been dropped, officials confirm.

The Essex district attorney's office says the decision to dismiss charges against former North Andover swim coach Elizabeth Backler was made after meeting with the alleged victim and her mother and reviewing the evidence that would have been presented at trial.

Backler, 28, was accused of giving oxycodone and diazepam to a former student athlete in 2015 to treat a shoulder injury.

No other details about the case were immediately available.

After her contract wasn't renewed at North Andover High School at the end of the 2014 school year, Backler worked at Amesbury Academy Charter School until she was charged in 2015. She has since been on paid administrative leave.
