E. Coli Found in Fair Haven, Vt. Water Supply

Boil water order has been issued due to presence of fecal coliform bacteria

Officials in Fair Haven, Vermont, have issued a boil water order after finding fecal coliform bacteria, also known as E. coli, in the water supply.

Town Manager Herb Durfee issued a statement saying that tap water should not be consumed without boiling it first, explaining that E. coli can make people sick, especially those with weakened immune systems. He listed diarrhea, cramps, nausea and headaches as some possible symptoms.

Durfee added in the statement that the presence of E. coli is a sign that the water "may be contaminated with human or animal wastes."

Officials in Fair Haven believe the contamination is present only in one segment of the water system, but testing is being performed to confirm that.

According to Durfee, the problem is expected to be resolved within 24 to 48 hours.

Anyone with questions about the town's problem is asked to call (802) 265-3010, Ext. 5.
