Early Child Care Workers Reject Joining Union

Early child care workers in Vermont have voted to reject a chance to join the American Federation of Teachers union

Early child care workers in Vermont have voted to reject a chance to join the American Federation of Teachers union.

Voting was done by mail. When the votes were counted Tuesday, the measure was defeated, with 418 against joining the union and 398 for joining.

This year, legislators passed a law that allowed early educators to unionize and negotiate a contract with the state. Vermont Early Educators United AFT filed for union recognition in September.

The union would have represented about 1,300 home child care workers.
