Evacuations Made as Crews Respond to Major Gas Leak

The evacuations were made out of an abundance of caution, according to police

Homes and businesses have been evacuated as crews respond to a major gas leak in Townsend, Massachusetts.

Police say the gas leak in the area of 55 Main St. was reported just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, where a Unitil crew was conducting a routine check when they hit a gas line.

The gas leak has closed down Main Street between Spaulding Street and Proctor Road, and residents are being urged to avoid the area.

The evacuations were made out of caution, according to police.
