A high school wrestling champion charged with beating an ex-teammate unconscious at a July Fourth party has been held without bail after a judge ruled him a dangerous person.

Eighteen-year-old Broc Dokos, who just graduated from Tewksbury High School in Massachusetts where he won a Division 2 state title in the 220-pound weight class, was held after a hearing Wednesday. The Sun of Lowell reports that he pleaded not guilty to assault and battery causing serious bodily injury and assault.

Prosecutors say at a party early Sunday he punched former teammate Stephen Bonugli, also 18, up to six times in the face, knocking him unconscious, breaking his jaw, and fracturing his orbital bone.

A defense attorney, citing witnesses, says Bonugli was the aggressor and her client was defending himself.
