Ex-Nursing Home Worker Convicted of Assaulting Patient

Paul Shartrand was found guilty of assault and battery on a disabled person and caretaker abuse of a disabled person

A former Berkshire County nursing home employee charged with sexually assaulting a bedridden patient under his care has been convicted of two charges, but acquitted of the most serious charge he faced.

Paul Shartrand was found guilty of assault and battery on a disabled person and caretaker abuse of a disabled person Monday in Berkshire Superior Court, but was acquitted of assault with intent to rape.

The Berkshire Eagle reports
that the 48-year-old Shartrand will be sentenced Tuesday.

Prosecutors say the certified nursing assistant assaulted the 55-year-old patient in August 2012 at the Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Lee. He was allegedly caught in the act by a supervisor.

Shartrand's attorney said the accusation was made by a supervisor who had a grudge against his client.
