Family Dog Killed by Falling Ice

A 13-year-old Jack Russell Terrier died after a sheet of ice crashed off the roof of a Tewksbury, Massachusetts, home.

 “I still can’t believe he’s gone, I really can’t.”

Michele McComber is still in shock over the death of her beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Dakota. The 13-year-old dog was just outside for a few minutes Sunday afternoon, when a sheet of ice came crashing off the roof of McComber’s Tewksbury, Massachusetts, home. Her husband was outside removing snow from another part of the roof when he heard the commotion.

“He heard him yelp, he heard the crash, like the ice go, and I thought he meant something minor, I wasn’t thinking, you know, who would have thought and we went out there and he was just laying there on the ground and I said 'oh no not Kota' and he turned his head and looked at me like 'sorry mom,'” McComber explained.

McComber rushed Dakota to the vet but he didn’t make it.

“I just said 'alright let him go, we can’t keep him forever,' I just didn’t expect it to be like this, not like this, I just feel like I let him down, I should have been more alert," McComber said.

McComber’s 11-year-old grandson Gaige grew up with Dakota and says no one is to blame. The family just hopes their story will help other pet owners– or even parents –avoid something even worse happening with all the snow and ice that could be sliding off roofs.

“Just be careful with your dog and where they’re going and stuff,” Gaige said.

“Start looking up because when it starts melting- I just want to save somebody else’s dog or child," McComber added.
