The investigation is ongoing after a Massachusetts man wielding what turned out to be a pellet gun was shot and killed by police officers responding to a domestic violence report in Spencer Sunday night.
The Worcester district attorney’s office said that officers tried to stop a car driven by a man thought to have been involved in a domestic violence situation around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
Police said after a brief chase, the driver pulled into a driveway, exited the car and pointed the pistol at the officer.
Thinking the man was armed with a handgun, an officer fired a single shot and hit the man.
The man, identified by authorities on Monday as 49-year-old Walter H. Lynde of East Brookfield, was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead.
The vehicle the suspect was driving was towed from the property around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
The officer who fired the fatal shot, Spencer police officer Brandon Fullam, has been a police officer for six years, and joined the Spencer Police Department last year, according to the DA's office.
