Mass. Fire Chief Injured Battling Blaze

Officials say the chief fell from a porch in Templeton, Mass.

The fire chief in Gardner, Massachusetts, injured battling a blaze in Templeton Friday, officials say.

Chief Richard Ares fell about six to eight feet from a porch and onto pavement while extinguishing flames at a single-family home on North Main Street.

An elderly man made it out of the house safely, but his dog, a chihuahua-terrier mix named Waldo, was killed.

The extent of Ares' injuries are not yet known, but the state's Fire Marshal's office says he was conscious, alert and speaking with EMTs on the way to the hospital.

Ares was transported via a medical helicopter. He is in stable condition at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester.
