Fire Guts Large Barn Used as Welding Shop

Maine fire officials say a 50-by-60-foot barn most recently used as a welding shop was decimated by a large fire that required a response from fire departments from multiple communities.

The Morning Sentinel reports the blaze was reported at a two-story, wood-frame barn at the former Dan's Used Cars complex in Benton around 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find flames jutting out of the large structure at the corner of Clinton Avenue and Sebasticook Bridge Road.

Fairfield Fire Chief Duane Bickford says the interior of the barn was gutted and equipment inside was destroyed. The barn was being rented by someone who was using the space as a welding shop.

The state fire marshal's office will visit the scene on Wednesday to determine the fire's cause.
